Medically Reviewed by Dr. Piyush Ranjan Padhi

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the innermost lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Common symptoms include bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

Ayurvedic Approach to Ulcerative Colitis

In Ayurveda, this condition is treated similarly to Raktatisara. The therapeutic goal is to stop bleeding, heal the colon ulcers, and soothe Pitta dosha through astringent herbs and specialized enemas like Pichha Basti (medicated milk/gel formulations that coat the colon lining).
