Fistula-in-Ano Treatment (Bhagandara)

An anal fistula (Fistula-in-ano) is a small tunnel or tract that connects an infected gland inside the anus to an opening on the skin around the anus. It typically develops after an anal abscess has drained.

Symptoms of Anal Fistula

• Constant or recurring foul-smelling pus or bloody discharge from the skin opening.
• Pain, redness, and swelling around the anus.
• Fever and chills in cases of acute abscess formation.
• Skin irritation and itching around the external opening.

Ksharasutra: The Gold-Standard Therapy

In classical Ayurvedic surgery (Shalyatantra), fistula is called Bhagandara. Classical surgery has a high recurrence rate, but Ksharasutra (medicated thread therapy) has a recurrence rate of less than 1%. A thread coated with herbal medicines is placed inside the tract, cutting and healing it simultaneously without damaging the sphincter muscles.

For select simple tracts, we offer modern Laser Fistula Closure. A radial laser fiber is inserted into the tract, delivering energy to collapse and seal the tunnel from the inside, preserving the sphincter completely.
