Ksharasutra Therapy: Medicated Thread Treatment
Ksharasutra is a specialized minimally invasive Ayurvedic surgical technique. It utilizes a medicated thread coated with herbal alkaline ash, plant latex, and turmeric to treat complex anorectal conditions, primarily Fistula-in-ano and Pilonidal sinus.
How the Medicated Thread is Prepared
The Ksharasutra thread is prepared using classical Shalyatantra formulations requiring 21 coatings:
- Snuhi Ksheera (Euphorbia latex): Serves as a binder and proteolytic agent to dissolve unhealthy fibrous tissue.
- Apamarga Kshara (Achyranthes aspera ash): An alkaline herbal ash that debrides the tract and chemically cuts through tough tissue.
- Haridra (Turmeric powder): Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agent to promote smooth healing.
Mechanism of Action
The thread cuts through the fistula tract gradually, millimeter by millimeter, while simultaneously debriding, sterilizing, and healing the tissues behind it. This slow cutting action prevents damage to the anal sphincter, preserving bowel control.
